Angel Chen for Canada Goose

Canada Goose partners with Angel Chen as a guest designer to develop a collection that reflects a crossroad of tradition and modernity, underpinned by a heritage of craftsmanship and functional expertise. Angel Chen’s experimental approach to design and colour, coupled with a fusion of Eastern and Western aesthetics, has made her one of fashion’s brightest young talents.

When we partnered with Angel Chen as our first-ever guest designer, we challenged her to take our heritage pieces (these pillars of craftsmanship and functional performance) to co-create a capsule based on an innovative design direction. Using our fabrics, technologies and iconic design features, Chen interprets Canada Goose through her unique perspective to create a fresh expression of our cold weather protection. We call it explorer meets experimental: She quite literally turns Canada Goose’s iconic style on its head with her signature spin. We knew her range of view and originative ethos was precisely what we needed to push our own creative boundaries. Chen is bold, bombastic, and brave. Her experimental approach to colour and proportion has not only made her a designer to watch, but a coveted person to collaborate with also. With a vision as unique as the clothes she conceives, she doesn't just push a proverbial envelope open; she lights the whole thing on fire.

That energy is transformative, and it has resulted in an exclusive thirteen-piece collection for women and men which follows the journey of winter in Canada to spring in Asia with Chen putting her signature twist on our outerwear.

Pieces boast volume and dimension; pops of spectacular colour with silhouettes that dare traditional shape.

For the colder months, our Women’s Cropped Snow Mantra offers a discerning silhouette that can be worn cropped and upside down, while the Men’s Convertible Snow Mantra can transform from a full parka to a vest. By experimenting with a removable lower half and sleeves, the versatility leaves creative license up to the wearer’s eye. Come springtime, our Mogan and Mordaga Rain Jackets, classics for use in transitional seasons, are available in new, vivid colours like Fortune Red and Lotus Pink to harken the spirit of the season. Simultaneously, the collection also offers a Chaka Vest, customizable with a belt at the waist and an oversized “split hood” that can be unzipped and unfolded like two wings across the shoulder blades. We’re also introducing our first-ever contemporary crossbody bags, inspired by antique drawstring bags, with cinchable drawcords and reflective details.

When pressed on her complex oeuvre, Chen says that this collaboration was a prism of ideas, versed by her culture and our pedigree. Here, she shares thoughts on some of her more poignant moments of inspiration.

"Dispel the Clouds and See the Sun” (拨云见日bō yún jiàn rì)—this is an old Chinese saying, and I think about it when I think about this collection and the time in which we designed it. It's very celebratory, not only because we could pull this off when the world was turned on its axis with a global pandemic, but it also represents the theme for this collection: the transition from winter to spring. This transition doesn't just happen seasonally, but it also happens mentally. The spring and a new future are ahead of us—we can finally see the sun.”

When I’m creating a collection, the first element I keep in mind is colour, and all my designs have to have a strong visual impact,”

says Chen. "I admire John Galliano and Vivienne Westwood because they express bold visual tension in their work, and I always want to make sure that there is the contrast in proportions. I think by incorporating interesting proportions, it changes the perspective people have towards clothing. We don't always have to wear clothes that fit our bodies seamlessly—we can change the shapes in the design and make bold silhouettes. That's really interesting to me."

I really want to present the beauty of Chinese culture to a global audience and have people see it in a new light,”

says Chen. “I love the idea of presenting our tradition, history, and design to the world. With a play on versatility, we combined aspects of both our signatures: bold colour from me and the hero pieces from Canada Goose to construct a new transformative style that tips into eastern and western aesthetics. That's always been a trademark of my designs.”
