The future of design lies with the next generation.
Together with Central Saint Martins, the renowned arts and design college based in London, we’re shaping the world though creative action and purpose-driven design. Our multi-year partnership brings a shared passion of creating ideas and actions for a better future to life through creative endeavors and sustainable innovation. Inaugurated in the 2022-2023 academic year across MA and BA programs, we invited students to design sustainably-led capsule collections that either leveraged warranty waste or were inspired by the work of research scientists at Polar Bears International. Explore exceptional highlights from the debut collections below.
Canada Goose x Women
Arianna Ablondi Pedretti
A collection concentrated on women scientists, drawing inspiration from those who were pioneering and often overlooked. “The project starts with questions: What is women’s functionality? What happened to women in science throughout history? Where did we hide them? What is respect to Mother Earth and ecology in a world where women are still so abused?,” says Pedretti. “My practise starts with another woman’s work. This could be a dancer, a scientist, a writer; from there I start developing my ideas and concepts. In this case the first person who inspired me was Rita Levi-Montalcini”.
MA Fashion student Arianna Ablondi Pedretti was born in Parma and raised between Italy, Switzerland and France. Her work focuses on feminism and functionality—including finding sustainability through paid craftsmanship and honoring women garment workers.
The Goose Ladies
Chie Kaya
“This is a reimagined real winter wardrobe designed for The Goose Ladies: female researchers and scientists from Polar Bears International. The aim is to design a look that these heroines are also able to wear after their work for occasional events,” says Kaya. “The functionality becomes unique embellishment, and the silhouette emphasizes femininity, giving the wearer a personality and attitude while prioritizing the comfort and warmth.”
Japanese-born designer and MA Fashion student Chie Kaya plays with themes of tension, nostalgia and femininity. Her vision is to reinterpret the splendid celebration of female form and capture the personality, character and identity of women through fashion.
Future Form: Objects by Yaku
Jacob Yakubu Stapleton
“My key point of reference when working was a long walk I had on a visit to Perm, Russia, many years ago. At Stone City, the dense forest and rock formations were draped in a clock of snow that almost looked factious,” says Stapleton. “Another natural reference were the skeletons of polar bears, along with human-made references coming from Charles James, a pioneer in garment design in the 20th century and Louise Bourgeois, another pioneer in the arts whose work frequently inspires my practice”.
Jacob Yakubu Stapleton is a 2023 Central Saint Martins MA Fashion Graduate. His research focuses on perception, natural form, and self-exploration through the lens of Afro-Futurism.
