There are two ways of looking at rain. It can be an inconvenience—or an invitation. To explore. To celebrate. To create. We choose option B. And we think you do too.
Shop NowWe were inspired by Japan’s deep veneration of rain. In the Japanese language, there are 50 different words to describe this precipitation, and when it falls, it is greeted as a gift.
For artists like Aoi Yamaguchi and Kouichi Okamoto, it is a creative lifeblood—and an essential part of their work.

Drip, drizzle, downpour: He makes art out of the sound of rain, creating a symphony of noise in harmony with nature. Born and bred in Japan, Okamoto says everything he does is shaped by the tradition of minimalism and simplicity. The sound piece he created for this project was recorded on location during the shoot in Wakayama, one of the rainiest places in Japan.
Yamaguchi trained under a master calligrapher for 13 years and uses the traditional white gasen-shi paper and dark sumi ink. For this project she created two large-scale Japanese characters, which together mean “Spring rain”. She was inspired by “the long rainy days in the early spring air: long-lasting but not relentless, gentle.” She translated this into calligraphy through wide, open strokes: “I wanted to symbolize the raindrops of ‘regeneration’ falling gently straight from the sky.”
